Diagnostic Medical Sonography (Probationary)


  • The Dignostic Medical Sonography Diploma program at Pharma-Medical Science College would provide training for individuals looking for a rewarding career to work in the Sonography fields. This 23 month amazing course are covering Abdomen and Small Parts, Gynecology, Obstetrics, Abdomen Vascular, minor Musculoskeletal and Pediatric Sonography.

    The whole course involves 23 months (100 weeks, 2698 hours) of intense learning. The learning involves theories , practical demonstrations of Ultrasound skills in the classroom and supervised practicum in school Lab and participate in clinical training with our affiliated clinical agencies

     The Program goal is to provide a comprehensive education preparing students for entry-level competency practice in Generalist Sonographer. To ensure students are qualified to perform ultrasound examinations of the abdomen, superficial structures, obstetrics, gynecological and lower extremity peripheral veins examinations

     Upon successful completion of this diploma program, students are eligible to write the national credentialing examinations for the Generalist Sonographer (Core/abdominal/ superficial structures, vascular for generalist, obstetrics and gynecology) conducted by Sonography Canada;  as well as the certification exams (SPI/abdominal /superficial structures, obstetrics and gynecology, MSK) by the American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonographer (ARDMS)

    Students who are successful on the examination become certified by Sonography Canada,  and qualify to registered with College of Medical Radiation and Imaging Technologists of Ontario (CMRITO) and practice as a Generalist Sonographer or specialize in a particular field

    About Probationary:

    The Ultrasound/Diagnostic Medical Sonography program is approved as a vocational program under Private Career College Act 2005 for a probationary period.

  • This program is 100 weeks long. There are 68 weeks instructor-led full-time training, lecture, and practice on campus and there are 32 weeks co-op placement in clinics or hospitals to obtain real-world experience.  

    • Minimum Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD) or equivalent.

    • Prefer to health care professionals with a 2 year related study in their field of study (some examples: Chiropodists, Nurse, Radiological Technologist, Radiation Therapist, Respiratory Therapist, etc), or bachelor degree in any major. 

     Additional Requirements:

    • Medical Certificate (Immunization Form) is required indicating that the student has up-to-date immunization 

    • CPR & First Aid Certificates – It is preferred to have completed STANDARD FIRST AID and BASIC RESCUER CPR prior to clinical placement

    • A police check of Criminal Record

    International students must have a demonstrated competency in English:

    • Canadian Academic English Language Assessment (CAEL) 50 marks

    • Paper-based TOEFL (PBT) 550

    • Internet-based TOEFL (IBT) 80 (20 min. in writing and speaking, 20 min. in reading and listening)

    • IELTS 5.5 (min. 5.0 in each band)

    • MELAB 75 (min. score)



  • The college will arrange your co-op practice in clinics or hospitals for 32 weeks to get real-world experience. This will help you in your future job search.

  • Ultrasound technologist is an occupation under Skills Matrix B in the NOC code.

    • Operate ultrasound imaging equipment to produce images of those parts of the body requiring examination
    • Monitor examination by viewing images on video screen, to evaluate quality and consistency of diagnostic images, and make adjustments to equipment as required
    • Record, store, and process scanned images 
    • Observe and care for patients throughout examinations to ensure patient safety and comfort
    • Prepare examination reports for physicians to aid in the diagnosis of disorders
    • Perform quality control checks on ultrasound equipment to ensure proper operation and perform minor repairs and adjustments as required
